Les was the 7th of 8 children. He grew up in Oklahoma during the Great Depression. His father had a produce market and a small farm, they had plenty of vegetables to eat. During WWII he joined the Navy when he was 17, and was stationed in Hawaii where he studied telegraph until the end of the war. After the war he was stationed in Guam. He moved to California, married Barbara MORSE and they had three children.

Les had a beautiful baritone singing voice and starred in musicals and light opera. He was also a gifted artist.
