The Border Times, Weston, Mo. 1-12-1866:
DARING ROBBERY AND MURDER.

On Thursday the 4th inst., three brothers Henry J., John W., and B. F. Freeland, started from this city for Kansas City by way of Leavenworth and Wyandotte. At Leavenworth they procured a hack, and in company with W. A. Ammon of that place, started late in the evening for Kansas City. When within a few miles of Wyandotte a number of men made their appearance in the road, and demanding a halt, immediately fired a volley into the hack. The party in the hack returned the fire and finally succeeded in driving back the robbers.

Henry J. Freeland — who at the time of the attack was riding with the driver on the outside — was at the close of the melee, missing. His brother Ben., while looking for him found a man lying near the road severely wounded, and as one of the attacking party had been seen to reel and fall from his horse, the wounded man was doubtless one of the robbers. The search for Henry Freeland was continued for some time, but proved unsuccessful, and the party having no loaded weapons, concluded to withdraw to a safe place to recharge their weapons. While thus engaged, they heard talking at or near the scene of action, and as the wounded man was gone the next morning, the talking had doubtless proceeded from the robbers who had come to carry away their wounded comrade.

Henry J. Freeland was found the next morning at a house in the neighborhood. He was wounded in three different places. He had been robbed of about sixty or seventy dollars in money, a small gold watch, and some small ingots of gold he had intended to take with him to St. Louis to be manufactured into rings. Some $20,000 which he carried in a belt, the robbers failed in getting. Every possible attention was given him, but it was soon apparent that one of his wounds was mortal and that human skill would be unavailing, and after lingering some twenty hours in great pain, he expired.

He was brought home on Saturday and buried at Platte City on Sunday. In the death of Henry J. Freeland, Platte County has lost one of her best citizens. In every relation of life, both public and private, he did his duty faithfully. May He “who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb” soothe the sorrows of the bereaved family.
