Martin was in the Civil War, enlisting for 3 years on 8/13/1861 and was honorably discharged 4/18/1862 because of loss of vision in the right eye along with other physical disabilities brought on by a severe contracted case of pleura pneumonia long neglected by his failure to have himself placed on sick report. He was 20 years old when he enlisted, 5' 8" tall, fair complexion with blue eyes.
