HENRY BROWN 1791-1865

Henry Brown was born February 27, 1791 in Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia the son of Johann Michael BRAUN - Brown 1751-1820 and Christina Poffenherrer COPENHAVER 1761-1849.

Johann Michael and his wife, Christina Braun/Brown were parents of:

1) Anna Catherine Brown 1784–1850
2) John Robert Brown 1789–1853
3) HENRY Brown 1791–1865
4) Michael Brown 1794-
5) Christina Brown 1795–1867
6) Mary Ann Braun 1800–1870
7) Elizabeth Brown Harkrader 1801–1881

In the book, A Historical Sketch of Johnson County, Indiana by D.D. Banta, published in 1881 by J.H. Beers & Co of Chicago, Illinois there is a small bio written on our Henry Brown: Henry Brown originally came from Virginia to Franklin County, Indiana, and thence to White River Township, Johnson County, Indiana. In the fall of 1819, he drove the first wagon whose wheels ever rolled over the county, in the removal of Jacob Whetzel from Brookville in the Bluffs of White River, and in four years after he returned to become a permanent citizen of it's valley. He was the brother of Michael Brown, who came the year before, and a cousin of Andrew Brown. He purchased the west half of the northeast quarter and east half of the northwest quarter of Section 20, Township 13 south, range 3 east, a pleasant, high situation and worked assiduously in its improvement, and soon realized such returns therefrom as enabled him to live with every comfort about him. He had long been, and at his death was, a leading member and officer of the Christian Church at the Bluffs. He died on the 18th day of September 1865, aged 74 years and 6 months. He left an aged widow and two sons with their families, to wit, T.J. Brown and Irvin H. Brown, in possession of the old homestead and it's pleasant memories.

HENRY BROWN originally from Virginia to Franklin County, Indiana, then to White River Township. A brother of Michael Brown born 1794 and cousin of Andrew Brown 1782-1862.

On the 17th of Dec 1804 Henry Brown 1791-1865 married Miss Mary A. "Polly" MUSSER in Essex County, Virginia.

Children of HENRY Brown and wife, Mary A. "Polly" Brown:

1) Roverty Brown born 24 Sep 1811 in Virginia
2) Elizabeth Almeda Brown born 3 Sep 1813 in Virginia -1880
3) Adam H. Brown born 19 Oct 1817 in Virginia -1902
4) Cynthia Ann Brown born 9 Jun 1817 in Ohio -1905
5) Mary Amina Brown born 7 Jan 1820 in Indiana -1900
6) IRBIN HENRY Brown born 1 Feb 1822 Indiana -1886
7) William Riley Brown born 18 Feb 1824 in Indiana -1855
8) Cyrus Brown 4 Jan 1826 in IN - 12 Mar 1906 MURDERED
9) David Sylvester Brown born 28 Dec 1827 in Indiana -1842
10) Amanda Melvina Brown born 24 Jan 1830 in Indiana -?
11) Emily Jane Brown born 25 May 1832 in Indiana -1890
12) Thomas Jefferson Brown born 19 Apr 1835 in Indiana - 1912

In 1819 Henry Brown and his family were residents of Johnson County, Indiana. Henry Brown was a leading member and officer of the Christian Church at the Bluffs - now Bluff Creek Christian Church. In 1826 Henry Brown served on the Grand Jury with Jesse Davison, Michael Brom, George Hollenback, Joab Woodruff, Nathan Culver, and others. Then the following year, Feb 26, 1827 Henry Brown 1791-1865 was a Witness to the Will of Absalon Absalom Lowe: Henry Brown AND Peter Doty are witness to this will. I am curious if Absalom Lowe is a relative or friend of the family since Henry Brown is buried in the "LOWE" Cemetery.

On the 18th of May 1827 a group of 22 residents of Bluff Creek community met at the home of HENRY BROWN & organized the BLUFF CREEK CHRISTIAN CHURCH. There is a nice newspaper article to that effect published in the Franklin, Indiana newspaper. In 1830, 1840, and 1850 Henry and Mary Brown were living in White River Township, Johnson County, Indiana with their children.

By 1860 Henry and Mary Brown are now in their late 60's and still living in White River Township, Johnson County, Indiana. By 1870 the Census shows Mary "Polly" MUSSER Brown a widow living with her son, Thomas Jefferson Brown, his wife Martha and his children in White River Township, Johnson County, Indiana. Her husband, Henry Brown died on the 18th of September 1865 and is buried at Lowe Cemetery, Bluff Creek, Johnson County, Indiana. In the matter of the Estate of Henry Brown 1791-1865, deceased. David Glassburn, Atty with the will annexed, Final Report: Examined approved, and promises satisfied and adm. discharged. Mutt - Judge
