Paul was the son of William Thomas and Minnie (Russell) Malone. His mother died around the time of this birth. It is thought that he was raised by the second wife - Anna (Brothers) Malone - of his grandfather, Absalom M. Malone.

Prior to WWI he served in the 26th Company of the Coast Artillery Corps and was stationed in Puget Sound. His daughter, Eathel Pauline "Pat" (Malone) Waltman says that he also was involved in the Mexican Expedition in search of Pancho Villa.

He left his family in the mid-1930s and was never heard from again.

He was a fifth generation blacksmith, descended from:
Johann Wilhelm Jager (1737-1823)
John Hunter, Junior (1762-ca 1835)
Absalom M. Malone (1823-1901)
William Thomas Malone (1858-1913)

Prior to being admitted to the Soldier's Home he had been living at the Worlds Rooming House in Wenatchee. At the time of admission to the Home he still listed his occupation as blacksmith.
