Samuel Rothrock Jr. (grave marker says Rothtrock) was the sixth of ten known children of Samuel Rothrock (1751-1838) and Anna Margaretha Preis (Price) (1761-1840), who married c1784 in presumably Pennsylvania.

Samuel Rothrock (1793-1870) married Margaret Eschbaugh (1795-1864) in c1818 in Pennsylvania. A 1886 Hancock County, Ohio history book says they had fifteen children, only three (all sons) still living in 1886. The names of only nine of them, three of whom died in infancy, are known. It is assumed that the other six all died young or very young. Samuel was a Minister in the Church of the Brethren (German Baptist) and a Brethren publication lists his birth and death dates, along with a location of Des Moines Valley, Iowa. Did the family live there for a time? The nine known children of Samuel and Margaret were namely:

1. Samuel Rothrock III (1820-1871)
2. Mary Rothrock (1823-1852)
3. Joseph Rothrock (1824-1907)
4. Hannah Rothrock Klingaman (1831-1882)
5. Amos Rothrock (1834-1910)
6. Levi Rothrock (1836-1911)
7. Sarah Rothrock (???-young)
8. Aaron Rothrock (???-young)
9. Eliza Rothrock (???-young)

The order of birth of the last three children is unknown. As mentioned above, there may have been another six children that died young, perhaps un-named.

In 1821 Samuel Rothrock Jr. bought land from his father in Berks County, Pennsylvania. In 1832 he bought land in Rapho Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was listed as a saddler. In 1835 the family moved to a farm near Canton, Stark County, Ohio. Samuel was a Minister of the Church of the Brethren (German Baptist). Another possible birth date for Samuel is 20 Apr 1793. In 1850 the parents (Samuel listed as a farmer), Mary, Amos and Levi (all born in Pennsylvania, except Levi, who was born in Ohio) were living at Nimishillen Township, Stark County, Ohio. In 1860 the parents were living alone at Copley Township, Summit County, Ohio with son Levi living next door. A Brethren Church publication lists his dates of birth and death and lists him as Des Moines Valley, Iowa. Did they move there after 1860? The son Levi was living in Polk County, Iowa in 1880, perhaps on land inherited from his father? An 1886 Hancock County, Ohio history book says they had 15 children, only three living in 1886: Josph, Amos and Levi.

Links to Samuel's parents, wife, five of his nine known children, and six of his nine known siblings are included below.

Suggested edit:

Great, great, great Grandfather. I believe he moved to the Beaver Township area of Polk County, Iowa in his later years to live with his son Amos. There is an entry in the Iowa Mortality Schedules, Polk County, 1870; showing a Saml Rothrock, from Pennsylvania, aged 76, who died in May of that year from Hydrothorax.
