Thomas Edgefield Butler died before 1860

Edgefield Advertiser (Edgefield, South Carolina) · Wed, Jul 25, 1855

Died, at his residence, Gosport, Clark County, Alabama, on the 2nd of July 1855, Major James G Butler, leaving a wife and seven small children to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and kind father.

Maj Butler was born in Edgefield District, SC, August 18th, 1796 - removed to Alabama in the year 1835. His strict integrity and gentlemanly deportment made him many warm and sincere friends, who deeply sympathise with his family with their loss.

As an evidence of his devotion to the State and District that gave him birth, his youngest child, a boy, born some forty hours before his death, when brought to him to see it (the morning previous to his decease) says he, "It is all right - it is a boy - its name is THOMAS EDGEFIELD, in honor of my native District." Says he, "I had written the Editor of the Edgefield Advertiser, some time since, that my next child - be it girl or boy - should be named Edgefield."

He particularly requested the writer of this to have his death published in the Edgefield Advertiser. J. F.
