Son of Samuel Thomas and Jane McHenry Adkinson.

He was a minister for the Southeast Indiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He served as president of Moore's Hill College in Indiana (now the University of Evansville), New Orleans University and Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta.

Dr. Adkinson was visiting Yelllowstone National Park in 1904 when he sustained a fall. He continued his duties at Gammon but died two years later.

He married Mary Elmira Osburn on July 28, 1863. Their children were: Laura, Isabella, Fannie, Albert Reed (who also became a pastor), Arthur Edwin, Jennie May and Rufus Harold
