He graduated from Indiana Asbury Univ.(DePauw) with A.B., A.M. & LL.B. degrees, and then moved to Sullivan Co. before the 1860 census was taken. It shows him as lawyer & druggist. He was elected Co. Rep. to the State Legislature in 1863. In Feb. 1864 he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Hiram Cloud to buy the drug store owned by A. J. Pellans. In a 1 1/2, Burton bought out Cloud and a month later took another partner, Dr. Stewart S. Coffman. The drugstore was located on the SW corner of the square. He was a member of the Indiana Legislature for 4 yrs. In 1868, Burton sold out and moved to Louisville, KY. to practice law. Moved to Sullivan Co., IN. in 1859; to Louisville, KY. in 1868; to TX. in 1869; to KY. in 1881; and then to MI, where he died. He was Mayor of Calvert City, Tx.; also city judge of that city. He was married to Margarette Elizabeth Akin, daughter of Sarah Rawlings Sedgwick and Col. Ransom Wallace Akin I on Dec 09, 1834 in Bloomington, Monroe Co., IN. They had two children: Charles Woodson Burton and Mary Evaline Burton.

Stephen Gieard Burton, born January 22, 1835, in Perryville, Kentucky. Residence, Lebanon, Kentucky. Educated, for three years, at Indiana Asbury University. Degrees, A. B., A. M., and LL. B., Indiana University. Occupation, lawyer, politician, minister. Position, deacon in Protestant Episcopal Church for six years, and then resumed the practice of law. A member of the Indiana Legislature for four years. Centennial orator, July 4,1876, at San Antonio, Texas. The address was published by the committee.
