BAXTER SPRINGS, KANSAS: Lorna Furgerson, 93, died at 11:00 p.m., Sunday, July 16, 2017, at Quaker Hill Manor, Lowell, KS.

Lorna Lee Chubb was born August 11, 1923, in Columbus, KS. She was the youngest of 12 children born to James and Ida Mae (Hall) Chubb.

After graduating from Columbus High School, Mrs. Furgerson attended Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, KS, before moving to Washington, DC, where she worked at the Pentagon.

While in Washington, on her birthday in 1942, she married James Pink Case. They returned to Baxter Springs in 1946. James preceded her in death March 16, 1974.

Lorna married Bill Furgerson in May, 1986, and moved with him to Cleveland, Oklahoma. She returned to Baxter Springs in September, 2008, after Bill’s death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her 11 siblings, and one granddaughter, Karin Ayotte, who died in 1997.

In addition to working as a housewife, Mrs. Furgerson had been employed at J.C. Penny, Baxter Springs. She last worked as an insurance clerk for Hartley Insurance Agency, Baxter Springs, and retired in 1986.

She enjoyed traveling, flower gardening, and bowling, but most of all she enjoyed her role as grandma and great-grandma.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Baxter Springs. She had also been a member of the Garden Club in Tulsa, OK.

Mrs. Furgerson is survived by one son, David L. Case, Carl Junction, MO; two daughters, Janet Lazenby (husband, Denton), Baxter Springs, and Barbara Sikes (husband, Alan), Bentonville, AR; 8 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; 3 step-children, 9 step-grandchildren, and many step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 20, 2017, at First United Methodist Church, Baxter Springs.

Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Pastor Wayne Handle will officiate.

Burial will be in Baxter Springs Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, or the Thrift Store and Food Pantry, in care of the funeral home.
