Born Feb. 4, 1935, in Hickory, NC to the late Gordon Jacob Weaver and Minnie Pearl Whitener Weaver, Pastor Weaver lived his life ministering to servicemen and women of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and afterward with congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

With his wife of 52 years, Barbara Aull Weaver, Pastor Weaver awoke most every day with the hope of helping someone else. His ministry happened as often in a pair of work gloves as it did in church robes. He once said that “being a farm boy, Eagle Scout, department store salesman, Marine Sergeant, textile mill worker, electrician and cancer-survivor paved the way” for his ministry.
After retiring as a Navy captain, Pastor Weaver accepted the call to shepherd Summer Memorial Lutheran Church in Newberry, where he served for 14 years. In 2010, he was named pastor emeritus at Summer Memorial.

In addition to his wife Barbara, survivors include a son, the Rev. Michael Gordon Weaver (J. Nelson-Weaver) of Winston-Salem, NC; a daughter, Jennifer J. Walrath (Ron Walrath) of Columbia; sisters, Joyce Brown of Hickory, NC and Cere Helton of Canton, GA; grandchildren, Paige Walrath Gates (Ryan Gates), Stephanie Walrath, Indigo Weaver and Julian Weaver; and great-granddaughter, Rylee Marie Gates.

Memorials may be made to the John and Barbara Weaver Scholarship at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, 4201 N. Main St., Columbia, SC 29203.
