In the Mennonite immigration movement of 1874, he with his parents came to America, making their home near Moundridge, Kansas. Here he grew to manhood and received his education. Father has lived in this community nearly all his life with the exception of living 2 years near Las Animas, Colo.
He was united in marriage to Elezibath Koehn in the year of 1893. Two children were born to this union. His companion was taken from him in death on June 25, 1897. He was again united in marriage to Ida Unruh on September 5, 1897. Nine children were born to this union. They shared joys and sorrows of life together for 54 years, 2 months, and 22 days.
Father was converted and baptized on Dec. 25, 1895, and remained a faithful member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. He has been a kind and worthy father to us, leaving us a good example in many ways, altho not without mistakes. At times he had a hard struggle to keep in clear sight his star of hope, but with the help of others and his determined efforts to believe the grace of God he was able to say that he was going to heaven. He had a great desire to depart from this world of sorrow and trouble.
Father has enjoyed very good health during most of his life until the last few years, when his age began to show its declining strength. On Nov. 7, his failing became very apparant. The doctor's cares were faithfully applied with some relief, but his heart continued to grow weaker until Monday morning at 2:30 A.M. he was relieved and peacefully fell asleep in the arms of Jesus, leaving us a good assurance of salvation.
He leaves to mourn his departure, me his sorrowing companion, 7 sons and 4 daughters: Mary, John, Tobe, Jonas, Susie (Mrs. Murphy Unruh), Della, (Mrs. Harvey Koehn), and Edwin, all of Galva, Kansas. Pete and Dan of Burns, Kansas, Alice (Mrs. Alfred Decker) of DeRidder, La. and Vivian of Ingalls, Kansas; 3 sons-in-law, 8 daughters-in-law, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, 44 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. Four brothers, two sisters, and four grandchildren preceded him in death-
'Tis hard to part with father dear,
No more on earth to see him here,
But yet we're glad if God thought best
To end his troubles and give him rest.
-Mother and Children
