Frank's parents are Jacob Copening (1836-1876) and Missouri Ellen Bess (1846-1873).

From The Salt Lake Tribune (Salt Lake City, UT) - Sunday, March 14, 1948:
Frank L. Copening Sr., 79, 1569 5th East, retired gas and oil man, died Saturday at 2:15 p.m. in a Salt Lake hospital of causes incident to age.
Long active in business and church circles in Salt Lake City, Mr. Copening was founder of Independent Gas and Oil Co. He served many years in presidency of Ensign Stake, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Born in Bessville, Mo., June 7, 1869 Mr. Copening came to Utah a convert to the LDS Church while still a young man. He colonized and sold land for the church near Delta, Millard county.
Mrs. Belle T. Copening, whom he married 55 years ago, survives.
Mr. Copening was a grandfather of Arnold Ferrin, University of Utah basketball team captain.
In addition to his widow he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nina Coulam, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Hiram W. Pingree, Los Angeles; one son, Frank L. Copening Jr., Pocatello, Ida., and 12 grandchildren.
