WINDSOR Gurvis E. Smeltzer, 92 died on Thursday, March 1, 2007, at Manor Care-Dallastown after a two month illness. He was the husband of Orpha O. (Tyson) Smeltzer, who passed away Feb ruary 18, 2002. Born January 19, 1915, in Windsor Twp., he was the son of the late Wesley and Ellen (Rider) Smeltzer. First attending school at the one room "Dam" School in Windsor Twp., he later attended the four room Windsor Primary School. Mr. Smeltzer graduated in the 1932 class of Red Lion High School. Gurvis worked for the Red Lion Cabinet Company, York Safe and Lock, and retired in the late 1970's from the former Grinnell Corporation in Columbia. He also had a small commercial farming business for many years, raising chickens, tomatoes, and various other crops. During the 1930's, Mr. Smeltzer was a player and a coach for several baseball teams in the Twilight and Industrial Leagues. Mr. Smeltzer also maintained a lifelong interest in Thoroughbred Horse Racing. During the 2005 Windsor Borough Centennial, Mr. Smeltzer provided many photographs, artifacts, and remembrances of his nearly 90 yrs. as a resident of Windsor Borough. He is survived by three sons, Gareth and Michael, both of Windsor, and Jerry, living in Indiana; three sisters, Minnie, who died as an infant, Mrs. Verna Byrd, and Mrs. Ruth Barnett; and two brothers, L. Clayton Smeltzer and Carl Smeltzer, who also preceded Mr. Smeltzer in death. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.
