History of Jackson Co Michigan
John BELDEN was born in Litchfield County, Conn, Dec. 16, 1806. His ancestors were among the earliest settlers of that county. During his youth he worked on his father's farm, and attended the district school winters. Afterward attended the high school at Groshen. For some time afterward he taught school in his native State, as well as in the State of New York, afterward attending in Ohio and Michigan. In 1832 he purchased land in section 26, in Spring Arbor, upon which he has since resided, and which is accounted one of the best farms in the county. In 1838 he married Harriet Hale, and has 1 son. He has held various offices of trust, including Supervisor, which he has had a number of times. He is universally esteemed as a man of strict integrity and kindness of heart, seeking rather the good of others than himself. His memory will be cherished by all who know him for his noble characteristics.
