Henry Isaac Hastings was born to Simeon Hastings and Sarah Martin on June 9, 1835, in Kanawha County, (West) Virginia. He moved from West Virginia to Kansas with his brother James in 1860, then to Colorado Territory by 1861. During the Civil War, he enlisted and was mustered in to Company C, 2nd Colorado Volunteer Infantry, and was described at enlistment as having brown eyes, black hair, a dark complexion, and standing 5 feet, 7 1/2 inches in height, with his birthplace listed as Virginia, age listed as 26, and occupation listed as miner. He was transferred as a Corporal to Company L, 1st Colorado Volunteer Cavalry on December 15, 1862, and was assigned to Company E at Fort Lyon, Colorado Territory on January 16, 1865. Henry was honorably discharged on November 18, 1865, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. After the war, he stayed in Kansas and married Sarah E. Smith in Jackson County on December 28, 1865. Together they had six children; James (b. 1868), Mary (b. 1870), William (b. 1872), John (b. 1874), Joseph (b. 1876), and Arilda (b. 1877). Henry lived in Kansas until the 1870s then moved home to West Virginia. Henry Isaac Hastings died on December 27, 1879, in West Virginia at the age of 44.
