Nathaniel Elvington DeGraffenreed was born 25 October 1834 at Christian County, Kentucky to Charles Tscharner DeGRAFFENREED/EID/IED (1803–1853) and Mary Herndon (1805–1858).

He is found in the 1850 census of Lawrence County, Missouri. He lost his father when he was 18 and his mother when he was 24. In 1860 Nathaniel lived at Elk River, McDonald County, Missouri and he married Nancy A. Anderson, daughter of Robert T. Anderson. On 6 Jun 1861 Nathaniel enlisted in Capt. Elliot's Regiment Home Guard at Mt. Vernon, Lawrence County, Missouri.

CHILDREN

All five of Nathaniel's children were born in Missouri. He had at least two sons and 3 daughters:

In 1861 his son, Joseph E. was born, either in McDonald or Lawrence County, Missouri.
In 1863, his daughter Mary E.;
In 1866, his daughter Sarah E.;
In 1868 Rosie; and
on 18 December 1870 John Andrew D. L.

Sometime between 18 Dec 1870 and 10 June 1872 Nathaniel lost his first wife, Nancy. He remarried 10 Jun 1872 at Benton County, Missouri, to a widow, Mrs. Mary Jane Shawver Hogue.

By at least 1873 Nathaniel moved his family to Grayson County Texas as he is found there on the tax rolls in that year. He remained there until at least 18 Feb 1885 when he received a grant of 80 acres there.

By 17 Aug 1896 Nathaniel moved his family to Linn, Marshall County, Oklahoma. It was there he applied to enter the Cherokee Nation based on the statement that his mother, Mary Herndon, had Cherokee blood. The application was denied.

According to his gravestone Nathaniel died 30 October 1899. He was buried at Mannsville, Johnston County, Oklahoma, USA

Mr. DEGRAFFENREED, aged 54 (sic 65) years, died Tuesday (sic Monday Oct 30, 1899) at Norton (which was near Mansville), with typhoid pneumonia, and was buried yesterday at the Hodges chapel (which is another name for the Norton Cemetery).
