Dean grew up working alongside his father on the family farm in northeastern Iowa. After graduating from Delhi High School, Dean enlisted in the Navy and served in the Korean War as an electronics technician on the attack transport ship USS Bexar. He joked that boot camp was like a vacation after years of hard farm labor.

Dean returned stateside, married and worked full time while raising a young family and attending the University of Iowa. He earned his BBA in 1963. Dean was employed in distribution and then transitioned to software integration, retiring from Carson Pirie Scot in the late 1990's. He did not fully retire, instead he became a certified tax preparation expert. He always said that he enjoyed the opportunity this provided to meet new people and hear their stories.

Dean spent the last 17 years enjoying the company of his friends and family, travelling the world and putting his creative energies into woodworking projects.

Dean was a kind, gentle man with a quick with and disarming sense of humor.

Dean passed away at home in the early morning on June 28 after battling esophageal cancer.
