Dolores Maderas Stanford April 1, 1917 - Sept. 6, 2009 "A mother holds her children's hands for a short while, but their hearts forever" Dolores was a remarkable woman, a unique blend of compassion, humility and service with a warm heart and loving smile. She lived a full life, devoted to her husband, her family and her friends. She was born in Santa Clara, the only child of the late Manuel and Mary Soares Maderas and was raised by her four aunties with strong traditional Portuguese values based on family, faith and fidelity. Dolores met Ken, her husband of 53 years, at a dance in Santa Clara. They were engaged in 1940. Ken was then sent to the Philippines. He was captured following the Japanese invasion, and spent 3 1/2 years as a POW in Japan. Throughout this uncertain ordeal, not knowing whether he was alive, Dolores remained faithful in devotion to him, never losing hope that God would return him to her. Upon his return, they were married at St Claire's Church in Santa Clara. Theirs was, under any definition, a true love story. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and provided a wholesome uplifting environment. She believed in doing the small things with care, intensity and integrity and never leaving anyone behind. Generous to a fault she will be missed and forever cherished. Dolores was a founding member of Holy Spirit Church. A very capable bridge player, she co-founded the lady's bridge club at Holy Spirit and competed in duplicate bridge through the age of 92. After the Vietnam War, Dolores and Ken "adopted" the Nguyn Family providing housing, support and encouragement. She was an active member of the Almaden Country Club. Her other associations include the Military Officers Association, the Druids and the Young Ladies Institute. She is survived by her devoted children Kathy Austin of Atlanta, Tad Stanford of Los Gatos, and Tricia Colvin of Bend OR; her loving grandchildren Jacob Austin, Sybil Fluker, Luke Austin, Casey Ann Colvin, Chad Colvin, Bryan Schreier, and Stephanie Todd.; and nine great grandchildren. Services will be held at 10AM on Monday, September 14, 2009 at Holy Spirit Church, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the memory of Dolores Stanford to Holy Spirit Church, 1200 Redmond Avenue, San Jose CA 95120.
