Lead Correctional Officer David Michael Anthony was a veteran officer who had served at the Iredell Correctional Center for over 10 1/2 years. He was born the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hurley Anthony on November 29, 1956. Lead Correctional Officer Anthony grew up in Harmony, N.C. and attended Harmony Elementary School and North Iredell High School graduating in May of 1975.
Mike, as he was known to his friends, furthered his education as a diesel mechanic at the Nashville auto Diesel College. Upon completion of his diesel training, Mike went to work for the I-40 Truck Center, an occupation he held for over 12 years.
Mike married Lynn Beck on July 2, 1976. Their first child, Hannah, was born in 1983. Their son, Chad, was born in 1987. Mike was very active in the lives of his children. He was the only baseball and softball coach Hannah and Chad ever had. Not only did he participate in things in which Hannah and Chad were involved, he supported every event at their school at North Iredell. Mike Anthony was a devoted husband and father.
Officer Anthony was active in his community as well. He was involved in the North Iredell High School Raiders in Search of Excellence. Officer Anthony volunteered many hours of his time to community projects and school activities.
Officer Anthony was a man of faith. He was a member of the Sandy Springs Baptist Church and later attended Mt Sinai Evangelical Methodist Church. Officer Anthony shared his faith with not only his fellow officers, but also with the inmates that were in his charge.
On February 9, 1988, David Michael Anthony became a correctional officer. Officer Anthony was a perfectionist. His fellow officers will tell you that he completed every task which he was assigned and did it well. On May 1, 1991, Correctional Officer Anthony was promoted to the rank of Lead Correctional Officer. Anthony was assigned as a supervisor to the inmate work detail at the Iredell Correctional Center.
On October 27, 1998, while supervising an inmate work detail, Lead Officer Anthony was struck by a tire that had been propelled from a passing semi tractor trailer. He did not survive the trauma of this accident.
Lead Correctional Officer Anthony became the eighth correctional officer to have lost his life in the line of duty serving the citizens of the state of North Carolina. Lead Correctional Officer Michael Anthony was 41 years old.
