Mary Hazel McNeil, 87, of Jonesboro, passed away on March 3, 2017, at Sunrise Care Facility in Jonesport. She was born in Jonesport on Jan. 20, 1931, the daughter of Leroy H. Lowe and Hazel M. (White) Lowe. She graduated from Jonesboro High School in the class of 1948. Among other occupations held by Mary, she was most proud of her time spent working at Downeast Community Hospital where she made many friends and lifelong connections. Mary enjoyed sewing, spending time with friends, birdwatching, and road trips with her late husband Fred McNeil. Mary was an active member of the Jonesboro Union Church and Jonesboro community. More than any activity or hobby, Mary most cherished spending time with her 3 sons and grandchildren. Mary is survived by her three sons, O. Patrick Mawhinney and his wife Wesley of East Machias, Joseph Mawhinney and his wife, Janet of Jonesboro, and Robert Mawhinney of Jonesboro; 6 granddaughters and 2 grandsons, Heather Mawhinney, Sadie and John Dunn and their 3 children, Cassie and Neil Fenstermaker and their son, William Mawhinney and his son, Kathryn Parenteau, Emily and Chad Fitzsimmons and their 4 children, Ross and Ashley Mawhinney and their 3 children, and Mary Mawhinney; 2 sisters, Natalie Catalona, of Pennsylvania, and Linda Varney and her husband, Jim, of Jonesboro; one sister-in-law, June Lowe of Skowhegan, special friend, Nancy Sanborn of Machias, and valued extended family members and loved ones. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Fred McNeil, and 3 sisters and 1 brother, Charlotte DeVencentis, Betty Varney, Leta Smith, and Dale Lowe. Friends and family will be notified of the date of her memorial service at a later time.
