Beaumont Grid Star Succumbs
Typhoid Fever Causes Death Wednesday
Funeral services for Sam victor Balliew, 28, former Royal Purple football star, who succumbed to typhoid fever at his residence here Wednesday afternoon, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Broussard's chapel. Balliew was captain and ace halfback of the 1925 Royal Purple team, and the dispute over his eligibility, following Beaumont's thrilling 8 to 7 victor of Waco, drew statewide attention. Interscholastic league officials finally ruled Balliew out. It was held that he had played football at Georgetown high prior to coming here. Balliew attended Rice institute after graduating here but not long enough to establish a collegiate gridiron reputation. In recent years he has been associated with various oil companies. Surviving Balliew are his wife, the former Elizabeth Barry; a son, Sam; and his father. W.L. Balliew of Georgetown.
