Berniece Lavelle Ford, 82 passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at her home in rural Glenwood, Missouri after a lengthy courageous illness. Berniece was born July 16, 1934 along with her twin brother, Bryce in rural Lancaster, Missouri to Austin and Wilma (Butts) Tallman.

Berniece was united in marriage to James Gordon Ford on May 17, 1953 at the Lancaster Christian Church and to this union five children were born. Berniece is survived by her husband, Gordon of the home; children, Lynn Fincher and husband, Terry of Memphis, Missouri, Walter Ford and wife, Sande of Glenwood, Missouri, Pam Ford of Independence, Missouri, James Ford of Glenwood, Missouri and Vickie Pierce and husband, Joe of Greentop, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Jill Fincher of Jefferson City, Missouri, Robin Bartlett and husband, Michael of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Lindsey Fincher of Jefferson City, Missouri, Logan Ford of Glenwood, Missouri, Madison Ford of Glenwood, Missouri, Whitney Pierce of Santa Clarita, California and Courtney Pierce of North Hollywood, California; two great granddaughters, Kailey and Payton Bartlett of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; twin brother, Bryce Tallman and wife, Ann of Lancaster, Missouri; one sister, Ann Ayer and husband, Dwight of Lake Ozark, Missouri; one sister-in-law, Vena Tallman of Lancaster, Missouri; many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law, Walter Ford; mother-in-law, Thelma (Trimble) Ford; sisters, Elizabeth Mullenix and Joyce Mobley; one brother, Eldon Tallman; two sisters-in-law, Martha Tallman and Patsy Horine; two brothers-in-law, Robert Moberly and Tim Mullenix.

Berniece was a graduate of the Lancaster High School in 1952. She was a member of the Lancaster Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school for 28 years. Berniece was very active in the Lancaster Christian Church CWS. Berniece lived for her family and community.

After her marriage to Gordon, Berniece became a military wife for four years. The first four years of her marriage, she would go back and forth between San Diego, California and Lancaster, Missouri. Berniece and Gordon then moved to Jennings, Missouri until 1966. At that time, they moved their family to Glenwood, Missouri and she settled in being a farmer’s wife and mother of five active children.

Berniece participated in all aspects of her children’s lives. She would volunteer for any school or community activity that would benefit her children and community. She was involved with 4-H and the Extension Council. Berniece enjoyed working in the garden and cooking. She was famously known for her coconut cream pie. Her last pie she made, approximately three weeks ago, brought $500 at a cancer benefit. Berniece was an avid sports fan with her favorite teams being Schuyler R-I Rams, Mizzou Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals. She always looked forward to watching the NCAA basketball tournament.

After her children left home, Berniece was not ready to give up having children around her. She started to be a caregiver for a number of children in Schuyler County. These children, who are grown, view Berniece as a mother and grandmother figure. Berniece enjoyed getting to know people and hearing their stories. When she asked a person how they were doing, she was sincere and genuinely cared for them. Berniece had a big heart that was reflected in her willingness and openness to help others. She would be the first to ask “What do you need and how can I help.”

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lancaster Christian Church in Lancaster, Missouri with Billy Wallace , Pastor of the Lancaster Christian Church assisted by Sonny Smyser, Pastor of the Schuyler County Church of Faith officiating. Music will be provided by organist, Jane Watkins and soloist, Laura Jacobs providing special selections of “How Great Thou Art”, “Jesus Loves Me” and “The Lord’s Prayer”. Tiffany Harris, harpist, will be providing music before and after the services.

Pallbearers will be Logan Ford, Gregory Buckallew, Jaron Shively, Curtis Tallman, Charles Tallman and Travis Roberts. Honorary pallbearers will be Jill Fincher, Robin Bartlett, Lindsey Fincher, Whitney Pierce, Courtney Pierce and Madison Ford.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at the Norman Funeral Home between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Lancaster Christian Church CWS or to the Schuyler County Cancer Relief Fund. Burial will be in the Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster, Missouri. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster, Missouri.
