Reed Averett – A long life lived well
Reed passed peacefully from this life on the morning of June 10, 2017, in his home in Heber City, Utah, where he was born on July 30, 1918. He was surrounded by family members who were privileged to be there with him. His wit and his spirit were strong, but his body was worn out from a lifetime of hard work.
Reed spent his working life in the timber and mining industries. He hauled timber and lumber out of the mountains in the summer months, often working 16 to 18 hour days. During this time he worked in the mines in the Park City area in the winter months. He worked the mines year round, after he decided the timber work was more than he wanted to continue. He spent a short time in the coal mines in Carbon County when the Park City mines closed. After he retired from mining he delivered Meals on Wheels for over twenty years.
Reed loved gardening. His children and grandchildren have fond memories of helping with the harvest and enjoying the fruits of his labor. His war on weeds was unequaled and very effective. His root cellar kept potatoes and carrots in excellent condition until the next harvest.
Reed’s favorite activities were having lunch and playing pool with his friends at the Senior Center, watching the Jazz and other teams on TV, reading the newspapers at the library and enjoying the view of Mt. Timpanogas, and taking care of his yard and garden.
Reed was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, his son Bruce, and his beloved wife Helen. He will be greatly missed by his daughter Sue (Kim) Loertscher and their family, stepsons Charles (Sharon) Jenkins, Don (Robyn) Jenkins, Peter (Merilee) Jenkins and their families and Bruce’s children Kelly Averett and Patrick Averett..
Reed requested that there be no funeral or obituary when he died. There will be a graveside service at the Heber City cemetery at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 3, 2017, for family and friends. Immediately following this service family and friends will gather in Reed’s backyard at 334 E. Center in Heber for milk and cookies and sharing memories. All are welcome.
