Norma J. Lawrey, 88, of Grand Island passed away surrounded by her family on Tuesday, June 27, 2017.

Graveside memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Pastor Sheri Lodel will officiate. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Norma was born on Sept. 26, 1928, in Grand Island, daughter of George H. and Vera Marie (Cottingham) Meyer.

Norma is survived by her daughters, Kathy Lawrey of Grand Island, Kim (Scott) Grim of Dannebrog and Chris (Derald) Watson of Grand Island; grandson, John Grim of Dannebrog; furry, four-legged companion, Sasha; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald Meyer; sister, Doris Hughes; mother-in-law and father-in-law, John and Bertha Lawrey; and best friend, Bobbie Lawrey.

As a lifelong Grand Island resident, Norma attended Howard Elementary, Walnut Jr. High and graduated from Grand Island High School in 1946.

On Aug. 14, 1949, Norma was united in marriage to Bill Lawrey. The couple made their home in Grand Island, where they owned and operated Nebraska Cycle. Norma was an essential part of the day-to-day running of Nebraska Cycle, handling the books, ordering parts and selling Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Although she was surrounded by Harley-Davidson bikes on a daily basis, Norma still enjoyed riding as a passenger on many trips.

Norma began in 1976 with her new job at Allen’s drug store, and continued to enjoy working there until it closed in 1985. In 1993, she found her place as a lunchroom and recess monitor for Newell Elementary School. She loved being there for all the children and watching them grow and learn. When Norma’s grandson, John, was born she left work for good and devoted all her time to being his grandma.

Norma embraced the simple joys in life. She was an avid reader, enjoying romance and historical novels. She took pride in making Christmastime special for all of her family, baking fudge and sugar cookies for everyone. Even not around the holiday season, Norma was a phenomenal cook and baker. Norma held many titles during her life. To her the most important was mother and grandmother.
