Dr. Mary Evelyn Blagg Huey

Dr. Mary Evelyn Blagg Huey, 95, of Denton, died Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at her home in Denton.

Dr. Huey was born on January 19, 1922 in Wills Point, TX to Henry Hurst Blagg and Melissa Evalina (Manning) Blagg. She was married to Dr. Griffin B. Huey on August 21, 1954 in Denton; he died on February 10, 2006. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Denton; inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame; the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society International and Daughters of the American Revolution, and was an active member of many civic and community groups around North Texas. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and music and a master’s degree in English literature from what was then Texas State College for Women in 1942. She taught English at the college from 1943 to 1945. She was assistant director of the Bureau of Public Administration at the University of Mississippi from 1946 to 1947. She went on to earn a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Kentucky and a Ph.D. in political science from Duke University. From 1947 to 1971, she was a faculty member in the government department at North Texas State University, now the University of North Texas. In 1971, she became dean of the graduate school at Texas Woman’s University. Then in 1976, she assumed the presidency at TWU and led the university until 1986.

She is survived by her son, Henry Griffin Huey and his wife Colleen of Round Rock; grandson, Greg Huey of Round Rock, TX.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, June 30, 2017 at Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust, Denton, TX. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, July 1, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, 1114 W. University Dr., Denton. Rev. Debbie Spangler will officiate the service. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
