He was graduated from Rutgers College in 1859, and later from the Albany Law School. During the Civil war he raised a company on Long Island and enlisted as Second Lieutenant in the 145th N. V. Volunteers; was promoted to to First Lieutenant and later transferred to the artillery. He took part in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg and afterward was promoted to the rank of Captain.
He married Julia F. DuBois in 1870, who died in 1893. He married Janet Tillotson Montgomery, in 1898.
