Daniel was a son of Daniel Hurd II & Esther Maltbe. He served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in Captain Samuel Wolcott's Company, Col. Hopkin's regiment; service between July 16, 1776 and Aug. 5, 1776; 16 days; travel home (120 miles) allowed; company marched to the Highlands, New York Roll sworn to in Berkshire County. On February 5, 1771 in Sandisfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, Daniel was joined in marriage to Rebecca L. Smith, daughter of Benjamin Smith Sr. & Ruth Snow. To this union, 6 daughters were born. Daniel is buried next to his first wife, Rebecca.
