Arthur L. 'Chip' Davis,
Ex-Boxer, Dies at 70

Arthur L. "Chip" Davis. 70.
of 85 Columbus Ave., an early
century boxer here who retired
from the sport in 1924 to become
a postal clerk, died Sunday
in Mercy Hospital.

Mr. Davis became a vice
president of the National Federation
of Postal Clerks 374
here before his retirement five
years ago and devoted more
than 25 years to the Boy
Scouts, five of them as Scout
commissioner of the Cazenovia
and Red Jacket districts.

He had been ailing since retirement
and had been a patient
at Roswell Park Memorial
Institute for a year before making
a physical comeback attempt
that ended with his admission
to Mercy Hospital in
March, 1968.

Featherweight Fighter
Mr. Davis, a bachelor, was
remembered by his generation
as a boxer whose courage was
matched by a sense of humor
that earned him occasional
chastening in the ring. As a
featherweight, he was a leading
figure at the former Broadway
Auditorium, the fistic center
of a city then regarded
nationally as a boxing capital.
He demonstrated his courage
early in his ring career when,
in Erie, Pa., he lost a preliminary
bout and then filled
in for a missing semifinalist
to win.

Mr. Davis later met Jack
Sharkey when Sharkey was a
bantamweight who would become
heavyweight champion
in 1932, Mr. Davis enraged
Sharkey by knocking him out
of the auditorium ring in the
first round but the fight ended
in a draw.

Taught Boys
Mr. Davis often walked the
three miles from his home to
the former St. John's Lutheran
home for boys at Harlem and
Mineral Spring, West Seneca,
to teach physical fitness and
defensive boxing to the youngsters.

His occasional variety shows
in the Cazenovia district raised
money for Boy Scout programs.
