Firman was born and raised in Dover, Missouri, the son of William and Rosie (Pointer) Arth. Firman had four siblings- Alvin, Theresa, Lorraine and Edwin Arth. He graduated from Dover High School in 1946. In high school he played on the basketball team and enjoyed returning to his reunions to see his old friends.

Firman met Polly Nan Awalt at the Lake City Ammunition Plant and they were married in 1955. Together they had two sons Greg and Mark Arth. Firman and Polly moved to Kansas City and built the home in which they lived until 1997 when Firman downsized his property and built a new house on the other half of his land. Firman and Polly both worked at AT&T together where Firman was their painter for 28 years before he retired in 1989. In addition to painting, Firman had his own painting business, raised cattle, loved Dalmatians and always loved the thought of working overtime to make the time and a half and most importantly his love for the Catholic Church.
