Mollie Ellen Hemphill was born 6 October 1882 in Marion County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of Henderson P. Hemphill and Margaret S. Holderby.
Mollie first married Edward Homer Couch on 3 March 1904 in Boone County, Arkansas. They were the parents of a son, Herbert O. Couch (born 1905) and a daughter, Nina Mae Couch (born 1906). This family appears on the Federal Census in 1910 for Prairie Township, Searcy County, Arkansas (S.D. 3, E.D. 110, Sheet 12). Not long afterward, the family removed to Hill County, Texas, where Homer died of tuberculosis on 26 December 1916. He was 35 years old. In 1920, Mollie and children are again recorded on the Federal Census living in Hill County, Texas (J.P. #3). Mollie eventually met and married Virgil Aubrey "Jack" Baty probably about 1923. They are shown in Census records for Oldham County , Texas in 1930. They apparently divorced. In 1940, Mollie is recorded as a "widow" and living with her son Herbert on the Census records for King City, Monterey County, California,(Page 16B, E.D. 27-23). Mollie(Nola) and Jack had a daughter named Verna. Verna married Frank Leroy Gowin. (Verna died in 2009 and Frank in 2004). California Death Records indicate that Mollie(Nola Baty) died 24 February 1964, San Luis Obispo County, California. Mollie was buried at the Greenfield Cemetery, Greenfield, Monterey County, California.
