David Neal Ballard Sr. was a son of Walter and Mary Jane (Hardesty) Ballard. He graduated Ames High School in 1937 and attended G.M.I.T. Flint, Mich. He was a superintendent of transportation at Iowa State University.
During World War II he was a sergeant in the U.S. Army serving in the Pacific Theater, 1944 and 1945. During the Korean Conflict he served in Korea, 1950 and 1951, receiving two Bronze Stars, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, United Nation Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He married Maxine Peterson on Dec. 22, 1939, in the Christian Church parsonage in Nevada.
He was a member of American Legion Post 37. David enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, the outdoors and feeding the birds and deer.
Survivors include his daughter, Sally (Gary) Faevel, of Kimberling City, Mo.; son, David Jr. (Joan), of Ames; brother, Morris or Maurice (Jake) Ballard, of Garden City, Calif.; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; special friends, Karen and Gary Feakes; and dog, Tricksi.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine; and brothers, Don and Fred.
