CORNVILLE / ALBION - Gwendolyn H. Hodges, 97, of Cornville and Albion, died on Thursday Dec. 29, 2016, at the Alfond Center for Health in August. She was born Jan. 15, 1919, in Strong, the youngest daughter along with four other sisters Rita, Inez, Pauline and Chispa, of Rev. Henry C. and Alma (Levitt) Glidden.

She lived in Albion from 1950 - 1965 before moving to Cornville where she helped manage a leased Exxon filling station as well as owning a Christmas tree farm with her husband Carleton Hodges. She took on the responsibility of running a Christmas wreath operation and helped with a retail tree lot in Stoneham, Mass.

She loved entertaining family and caring for her grandchildren at a swimming pool which they had on the farm. In her later years she was able to spend winters in Texas prior to her husband's death and then in St. Petersburg, Fla. to be close to her last surviving sister, Chispa Nickse.

After Chispa's death she returned to her beloved Albion where she lived at Meadow by the Brook and reconnected with friends that she had made before she moved to Cornville. The last two years prior to her death she was a resident at the Woodland Nursing Home in Waterville. She made many friends wherever she was and was admired by all who knew her.

She was predeceased by her husband Carleton; sons Ronald, Carleton Jr., daughter Peggy Darsauoui. She is survived by her sons David, Terry and John. many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at the Collins Cemetery in Cornville. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. (Central Maine Newspapers 6/17/2017)
