ST. HELENA, Neb. — Lorraine G. Schmidt, age 83, of St. Helena, NE, died on Monday, June 9, 2008, at the Avera Yankton Care Center in Yankton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, June 12, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church in St. Helena with Rev Michael Keating officiating. Burial will be in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m. with a rosary at 2:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. There will be a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the church. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Patrick Schmidt, Nathan Loecker, Shawn Brandt, Robert Sudbeck, Andrew Schmidt, Troy Loecker, Randy Goddard and Christopher Brandt.
Lorraine was born on July 10, 1924, at Fordyce, NE to Anthony J. and Mary Margaret (Sudbeck) Arens. She grew up in the Fordyce area and married Anthony G. Schmidt on April 23, 1951 at Bow Valley. They farmed in the St. Helena area and she also worked at East Catholic Grade School in St. Helena, the Freeman Company in Yankton, and at Gurney’s in Yankton.
Lorraine was a member of the Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church and Altar Society in St. Helena. She helped provide flowers for the church for many years. She loved to garden, can, bake and spend time with her family.
Lorraine is survived by 10 children: Elaine and Dean Sudbeck of Tyndall, SD, George Schmidt of Stanton, NE, Sharon and Wally Goddard of South Sioux City, NE, Dennis and Beverly Schmidt of Yankton, Debra and Mark Loecker of Fordyce, Arlene and Joseph Brandt of Yankton, Lois and Michael Schieffer of Crofton, Kevin Schmidt of St. Helena, Marty Schmidt of Yankton, Mike Schmidt of Ponca; 24 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers: Kenneth and Ruth Arens of Fordyce, Dennis and Mary Frances Arens of Hartington; 2 sisters: Janita and Robert Uhing of Niobrara, and Delores and Charles Arens of Crofton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on Oct 28, 1995 at the age of 73; a son, Duane; an infant daughter, Mary; 1 great-grandson, Draven Novak; 3 brothers: Damian, Jerome, and Gerald Arens, and a sister, Evelyn Koch.
