Kenneth Gene Bennett, Sioux Falls, died peacefully on June 8, 2017, following complications during liver transplant surgery. He was a man of quick wit; an easy-going attitude; and tremendous heart. He was 65 years old.
Kenny was born on May 14, 1952. He grew up on a farm near Woonsocket and attended country school until the sixth grade. He graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1970.
After working several years in road construction, Kenny spent the next 38 years employed with the South Dakota Department of Transportation both in Woonsocket and Sioux Falls. He made many lifelong friends at the DOT and retired in June 2016.
For 19 years, Kenny shared his life with his beloved wife, Cheryl. As the saying goes, they were two peas in a pod. Cheryl was his best friend and soul mate, and she was an immense comfort to him always. They loved spending time with their grandson, Judd, and their nephews, Adam and Nathan. They also enjoyed vacationing along the shores of Lake Superior and the Black Hills.
Kenny was the proud father of two daughters, Jody and Tracy. He considered fatherhood the greatest and most important job he ever had. His daughters are eternally grateful for his unconditional love and the many nuggets of wisdom he relished sharing with his girls.
Kenny had a special place in his heart for his hometown of Woonsocket. He considered himself a small town boy, and he cherished his many lasting hometown friendships. While living in Woonsocket, he served as a volunteer fireman for the Wide Awake Hose Company Fire Department, and he was an avid golfer at the Pony Hills Country Club.
Kenny is survived by his wife Cheryl Bennett; daughters Jody Bennett and Tracy Bennett; grandson Judd Farrell; brother Jack (Ruth) Bennett; sister Sandy (Rich) Schreiner; sister-in-law Linda Heiliger; mother of his children Georgia Bennett; and the best golf buddies a man could ever have. He was preceded in death by his mother Della Larson; father Clarence Larson; brother Terry Lindley; sister Karen Skinner; former father-in-law Douglas Strand; and his faithful dog Bugsy.
A memorial service at Miller Funeral home in Sioux Falls is pending. In lieu of flowers, the family will be accepting donations that will be given to the Woonsocket Fire Department in honor of Kenny’s memory.
We are thankful for the lifetime of memories, laughter, and smiles Kenny gave us. He enriched our lives and will forever be in our hearts. Bunger was truly an original.
