Lila F. Jaeger, vintner, civic leader and purveyor of boutique olive oil, died Monday at her beach house in Del Mar, San Diego County.

Mrs. Jaeger, who also lived in Napa, was 70.

Active until the end of her life, Mrs. Jaeger was leading preparations for the Jaeger family Fourth of July celebration when she died of heart failure.

Born in Oakland in 1931, Mrs. Jaeger attended Piedmont schools and Stanford University.

In 1970, she and her husband, Bill Jaeger, moved from Piedmont to St. Helena to be closer to their winery business, the Freemark Abbey Winery, which they opened in 1967. In 1976, the couple opened their successful Rutherford Hill Winery.

But it wasn't until the late 1980s that Mrs. Jaeger, dismayed by the sight of untended olive orchards in the Napa Valley, began pursuing her new passion - - making extra virgin olive oil.

As the first president of the Northern California Olive Council, Mrs. Jaeger encouraged neighboring vintners to revive old olive orchards and co- sponsored seminars with experts on olive culture. Her odyssey culminated with several awards, including her recent receipt of the Gold Medal at the Los Angeles County Fair for her extra virgin olive oil.

"She was the founder and grand dame of the Olive Oil Council in Northern California," said Ed Stolman, Mrs. Jaeger's friend and founder of the Olive Press in Glen Ellen. "Her foresight and energy made people in this region realize they could once again (harvest and sell) extra virgin olive oil."

A master gardener, Mrs. Jaeger began two garden clubs and was a member of the Piedmont chapter of the Garden Club of America.

In addition to her work in the Napa Valley, Mrs. Jaeger was active in a variety of community and civic organizations. She was a board member of the Hoover Institution and Planned Parenthood of Shasta-Diablo, played in the bell choir of the Methodist Church of St. Helena and was a founding board member of the Napa Valley Museum.

Mrs. Jaeger's survivors include her husband, Bill Jaeger of Napa; a daughter, Betsy Morgenthaler of Palo Alto; three sons, Billy and Jeff, both of St. Helena, and Jack of Del Mar; a sister, Joan Burns of Columbia, Mo.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services for Mrs. Jaeger will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Jaeger home in Napa.

The family asks that donations be made to the California Native Plant Society, Napa Valley Chapter, c/o Skyline Park, 2201 Imola Ave., Napa CA 94559, or the St. Helena Performing Arts Theatre Foundation, 1230 Pine St., St. Helena CA 94574.
