William Henry Roop Sr., 84, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 7, 2017, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Senatobia, MS.

Henry was born in Memphis on August 29, 1932, the son of Dorothy and John Wilson Roop, Sr.

He grew up in the Cooper-Young district and attended Peabody, Fairview, Central High School and Memphis State. An entrepreneur at heart as evidenced by his early success as a lemonade salesman and having a paper route and later he built several successful businesses in his lifetime.

He served his country in the Navy during the Korean War on the destroyer the USS Hamner and always enjoyed the annual reunions of the Hamner veterans.

He became interested in the automobile business as his dad had been an automobile District Manager. He along with brother Robert began Roop Motor Company in Millington and later became interested in camper tops and accessories opening Camper City locations on Lamar Avenue and Horn Lake, MS. His drive for excellence continued with the development of a very successful business with his son Timothy, daughter Becky, and his brother Robert in Camper City USA in Horn Lake, MS. He received several national sales awards noting his success.

He leaves his wife of sixty years, Norma Bolin Roop, three sons; Henry Jr., Walter (Cindy), Timothy (Angie) and a daughter Becky Roop. Seven grandchildren; Helon Roop, Lacey Roop, Tyler Roop, Olivia Roop, Jasmine Brock, Victoria Bobo, and Trenton Roop, two great grandchildren; Carter Bobo and Emmaline Bobo. Also, his brother Robert and sister Laura Dee and her husband Dr. Morris Robbins.

His brother Wilson died in 2001.

Henry leaves wonderful memories for everyone who knew him. He enjoyed watching his children and his grandchildren at their ball games and in telling them many great and funny stories. Well known for taking his family on many trips such as Hawaii, Florida, trout and bass fishing in Missouri, and short close by trips that gave them the fun of being together, even visiting Magazine Mountain in Arkansas shortly after his cancer diagnosis. You just couldn’t hold him down.

A real TV fan, and did he love those old Westerns and with Becky they watched 205 ID channel with that great percolator coffee with French vanilla cream she made!
One of his greatest pleasures was the every Sunday night poker games with several of his close friends. And, in many times a winner. They will truly miss him as will Peachie, his long haired miniature Dachshund who was Henry’s best buddy and did they have some great times together.

He taught his children and grandchildren to say “Yes, Sir” and “Yes, Ma’am” and to always give a firm hand shake.
Henry was a friend to everyone he met and he made everyone he met a better person.

Special thanks go to Dr. Moon Fenton of the West Clinic and all the wonderful staff on the second floor of Crews Wing at Methodist University Hospital and to Methodist Hospice.

Sunday, June 11, at 2:30 p.m. services at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Brother Phillip Dearman of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church, Sardis, Mississippi officiating.
