John Vanderslice Barnes, Jr., known to all as Jack, passed away May 30, 2017 at the age of 93 at Sunnyside Retirement Community Health Care. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Augusta Cox Barnes, son John V. Barnes III and wife, Kathryn; three grandchildren, Lesley Ross Barnes, John Kent Barnes and wife, Rachel Nania Barnes and Joseph Bryant Barnes; and one great grandchild Isaac Barnes.

Jack was born October 6, 1923 in Roanoke, Virginia to John V. Barnes, Sr. and Anna Barnes, and was preceded in death by his sisters Janet Barnes Armstrong, Lois Barnes Urick, Anna Barnes Deyerle, and Alice Barnes Taylor.

He joined the U.S Army Air Force and served as a B24 pilot in the 460th Bomb Group during World War II. Following the war, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1948 with a degree in Industrial Engineering, and spent career in the steel fabrication industry in Roanoke, Birmingham AL, Pittsburgh PA, Bristol VA, and Richmond VA. On March 20, 1948, he married Mary Augusta Cox, with whom he spent 69 wonderful years as a devoted husband and father.

Jack was always active in the community, serving among other things in the Kiwanis Club and on the board of directors of the local Salvation Army while living in Bristol and in the Rotary Club while living in Richmond. He was a faithful member, Sunday school teacher and elder in the Presbyterian Church. Golf and Hokie football were his two great sporting passions, and he also enjoyed reading, travel, projects around the home, and most of all spending time with family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11am at the Meredith Chapel at Sunnyside Retirement Community with Chaplain Will Lowrance officiating. Interment will be private at Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke, VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Sunnyside Retirement Community Fellowship Fund.
