Tollie Strain & Mabel Carolyn Rainey were married 21 Dec 1922.


Mabel Rainey was the daughter of Charles Kirby & Narcissus Jane (Jarvis) Starkey Rainey.

Mabel moved from Caviness, TX to Swink, OK with her mother & dad in 1917. She completed the 10th grade then attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant, Bryan County, OK to become a school teacher.

She received her Teaching Diploma in 1918. Her first job was teaching summer school at Rufe in 1919. In 1919/1920 she taught a full tern of school at Chigger Ridge which was located southeast of Swink. Her Certificate was renewed November 20, 1920 good until November, 1, 1921. On July 25, 1921 she entered into a contract to teach school at Plain View (Rufe), School District No. 12, Mc Curtain County, OK. She would begin on July 25, 1921 for a period of 8 months, with a starting salary of $110.00 per month. Her Teaching Certificate was renewed July 27, 1921 to expire July 27, 1923.

Mabel's mother had a bad case of indigestion the night she died. She had drank Coffee with cream in it and Mabel always thought that was what gave her indigestion and caused her death but her mother had a heart attack and the indigestion was just the start of the attack.

Mabel's husband always called her by the name of Mutsy.



THE PARIS NEWS, APRIL 8, 1983: HUGO, Okla. -Mable Strain of Swink died Thursday, April 7, at Choctaw Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held Saturday, April 9, at 2 PM in Lampton-Mills Funeral Chaple with the Rev. Bill Boyd officiating. Burel will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Mrs Strain, 81, was born Oct. 29, 1901, in Caviness, TX. She had lived in Choctaw County 67 years. She was a member of the Baptist church at Swink.

surviving are four sons, Sidney T. Strain of El Paso, John G. Strain of Valliant, Tommy J. Strain of Arlington and Roger C. Strain of Swink; one daughter, Narcissus C. Mohr of Dell City; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grand children.
