William R. Stevens was born on March 23, 1834 in or around the Imlaystown area of New Jersey. He was the son of John L. Stevens and Phoebe (Chambers) Stevens. As a young man he lived and worked on the farm of Joseph Bullock, where he is found living on the 1850 US Census. He later took up trade as a carpenter. On January 15, 1857 , William married Harriet H. Taylor, the daughter of Benjamin and Eliza (Reed) Taylor. They were the parents of nine children:

William R. Stevens, 83 years old, died this morning. the funeral will be held from the home of his son, Elwood W. Stevens, 233 Beechwood Avenue, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, under the direction of Poulson & Coleman. Mr. Stevens is survived by two sons,
Elwood Stevens and Edward E. Stevens, of Florida, and dau. Mrs. Lidie Jones.
