Josephine A. Whitaker, 93, of Dahlgren died on May 24, 2017.

Mrs. Whitaker spent the last five years in Florida, where she was close to family. She had a heart attack and passed away a few days later.

Mrs. Whitaker was born in Pennsylvania but moved to coral Gables, Florida, with her family as an infant where she was raised until adulthood. She graduated from the University of Miami in 1944 where she majored in music. She was a member of Chi Omega and Sigma Alpha Iota sororities. She met her husband, Robert C. Whitaker, at The University of Miami and they were married in North Carolina after her graduation. Mrs. Whitaker was a noted flutist. She played flute in the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. John Bitter until 1944. She played in the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Benjamin Swalin in 1948 and she played for five years in the Mary Washington College-Community Symphony Orchestra in Fredericksburg under the direction of Dr. James Baker until 1979. She taught music in King George Public Schools for ten years, was a substitute teacher for five years and gave private flute lessons. She was Choir Director of the Dahlgren Base Chapel for several years. Mrs. Whitaker was a member of Oakland Baptist Church, where she was a choir member and served as Director of the Women's Mission Union. Mr. and Mrs. Whitaker traveled extensively after their retirement.

She is survived by one daughter, Dr. K. Gail Whitaker; three sons, James M. Whitaker, Dr. Ralph G. Whitaker, and Keith T. Whitaker; four grandsons and two granddaughters.


A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, at Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Guy D. Mattox, Jr. officiating.
