Thomas Jefferson "TJ" Beets was born Nov. 14,1860 in the Kansas Territory. He was the son of John and Mary White Beets the 1st pioneer settlers in that area of Lykins Co. (Now Miami County) North of what is now Hillsdale Ks.
On his 24th Birthday, He married Miss Mary Cummings. They had 2 children.
TJ died November 4,1887, just 10 days before his 27 Birthday! He is burried in the old side of the Hillsdale Cemetary.

* Sadly, the top portion of his headstone is missing.Only the base is left bearing the dates, and the following inscriptions;
"No night shall be in heaven no gathering gloom shall oer that glorious landscape eevr come."

The following is an excerpt from the Western Spirit Newspaper of Paola, Nov.1887;

OBITUARY
Once more the dark messenger has visited us, and with but a brief protest, has taken from our midst TJ Beets; one loved by many and respected by all who knew him throughout the county, and especially near his home in Marysville township. He leaves a wife and two little ones to mourn a kind husband and indulgent parent. ......
