Aurilla (Aura) Ellen Bice, daughter of the late Frank and Elsie Hoaglund Bice was born July 9, 1882, at Motor (near present site of Codell, Kansas). She was the fourth child among ten brothers and sisters. After several months illness, she died in Portland, Oregon, April 9, 1961, at the age of 78 years and nine months. On June 6, 1917, she was united in marriage to William H. Thomas of Waldo, Kansas. To this union two children were born, William Dwayne and Mary Jane. Dwayne gave his life for his country in World War II. He was taken prisoner during the battle for Corregidor and died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in 1943. Aura Bice was a successful teacher for many years before her marriage, having taught in Woodston, Palco, Russell and Waldo. She entered Fort Hays State Teachers college in the summer of 1903 from which she was one of the early graduates. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas spent several years farming in Osborne and Rooks county. The family moved to Longmont, Colorado, where Dwayne entered the service. They later moved to Richmond and Berkeley, California. Seven years ago they moved to Portland to be near their daughter, Mary Jane, and her family. When she was a young girl she became a member of the Methodist church at Plainville, Kansas. In each location in which she made her home she has been a faithful and devoted member. …
