Elizabeth was the daughter of Charles Mayo and Margaret Weston. The family emigrated from England when Elizabeth was a small child. On April 13, 1889, Elizabeth married Henry L. Boughter, the son of Henry Buchter and Rachel Levengood. They had twelve children, eleven of whom survived into adulthood.

Henry died in 1921 at the age of 54, leaving Elizabeth alone to raise the younger children. She died in 1963 at the age of 93. She was survived by one daughter, 8 sons, 21 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, and 29 great-great grandchildren - for a total of 121 surviving descendants.
