Joy always enjoyed playing and watching sports. Joy played softball and basketball in his early years. Joy was on 2 Sectional Championship Teams during his junior and senior years at Chester Center. Joy graduated from Chester Center in Wells County in 1948.
In 1950, Joy left Poneto, Indiana to join the United States Navy. Joy served his country aboard the USS Valley Forge until 1954.
Joy met Dorotha Crockett in 1950 and wrote her letters while serving his country. In August of 1955, Joy and Dorotha were married at the Pennville Methodist church.
After 4 years Joy and Dorotha welcomed a son, Chris Michael Teagle.
They had their second son, Craig Douglas Teagle in 1963.
Joy worked and retired from Rock Tenn, Eaton, Indiana. He purchased the Teagle family farm that has been in their name since 1905.
Joy always loved to entertain and make people smile. He always had a joke to tell. So naturally Joy began calling square dancing. Joy enjoyed teaching and calling square dances for more than 40 years. Joy and Dorotha traveled through the states of Indiana, Michigan, Florida, and Ohio. Joy and Dorotha established many friendships over the years.
After retiring from Rock Tenn, Joy and Dorotha went to Crystal Lake, Florida.
Joy was a former member of the American Square Dancing Association, and the Indiana Callers Association. He was also a member of the Millard-Brown American Legion Post 156, Montpelier since 1956.
In 1983, Joy and Dorotha’s son Chris married Lisa Hummer from Hartford City. They have two beautiful daughters, Emily Teagle Urlage and Brittany Teagle Ramirez. Emily and her husband, Brian, live in Latonia, Kentucky and have a 2-year-old daughter, Rachel Joy, and a 7-month son, Nathan. Brittany and her husband, Andrew, live in Muncie, Indiana.
In 1989, their son Craig, married Shelley Gothrup from Hartford City, Indiana. They have 3 children, Alexa, Trey, and Lauren.
Joy was very proud of his son’s accomplishments. He spent many hours debating with Chris, and the family believes that this attribute is what makes Chris such a successful attorney to this day. Many hours were also spent playing sports; they say Joy would of kept playing basketball if he hadn’t turned his ankle messing around with the boys. Craig continues today loving the sport of basketball, and has been a phenomenal coach with over three hundred wins, and taking one of his teams to the State Championship game.
In Joy’s retirement he enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sports, watching sports on tv, and spending time with family and friends.
Joy was a loving husband, a wonderful father, and very caring and considerate grandpa.
