Mrs. Erding, 89, of Wykoff, died Tuesday (Feb. 13, 2007) at the Stewartville Care Center. She had been a resident of the care center since 2003.
Mariette Johns was born Jan. 3, 1918, on the family farm on Garvin Heights, near Winona. She attended country school near Wilson, rural Winona, and was a 1936 graduate of the Faribault School for the Deaf. She worked as a beautician during World War II until her marriage to Kenneth J. Erding Sr. on June 15, 1948, in Winona. They lived in Wykoff from 1948 until moving to Root River Estates in Stewartville in 2001. Her husband was the Wykoff postmaster; he retired in 1980. She was a longtime member of St. Kilian Catholic Church in Wykoff and was active in the Altar Society. She was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Spring Valley, and was a seamstress, gardener and cook. She was known for her home-grown flowers and provided many bouquets for St. Kilian Catholic Church.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Jr. (Arlene) and Jeff (Cindy), both of Wykoff, and Gregg (Lori) of Chatfield; a daughter, Sandy (Doug) Dose of Rochester; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Jacob (Linda) Johns of Canyon Lake, Texas, Marcellas Johns of Peoria, Ariz., Len Johns of Crestline, Calif., and Milton Johns of Yucca Valley, Calif.; and a sister, Laura (Carlo) Mascolo of Cloverdale, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 9, 2002, a brother and four sisters.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church, and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church. There will be a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
