Beloved wife of the late Henry Maxwell. Mrs. Maxwell was a teacher in the Hamtramck public schools for 40 years.

From a newspaper article written by Corey Williams of 'The Detroit News' dated March 4, 1994:

Man Found Slain: Did He Attack Woman Earlier?

Minutes after a 95 year old woman dialed 911 to report she'd been sexually assaulted an ex-con was shot in the head and dumped onto I-96, two blocks away from the woman's house.

Now, Detroit police are investigating both crimes and the possibility the man was killed in retaliation for the Monday morning attack on the woman.

Stanford Fitzgerald Baylor, 30, who was paroled Monday from a Sault Ste Marie prison camp was discovered on the highway at Interstate I-96 and Wyoming at about 3:30 am police said.

Only minutes earlier, police had received an emergency call from the elderly woman, who said she was attacked by a man who broke into her home, only two blocks from the site of the slaying. The description she gave of the attacker matched Baylor's.

Police Inspector Richard Ridling said that "one of several theories" police are investigating is whether someone killed Baylor in an act of vengeance.

Ridling said police have no suspects. However, "the time element and the fact that they happened about two blocks away makes (retaliation)something we have to consider," said Ridling, homicide commander.

The incident began shortly after 3 a.m. police said, when the woman heard a noise at her bedroom window and saw a man enter the room.

He tried to rape her, she told police but she struggled with him until he gave up and fled, breaking out a living room window when he could not open the front door. She phoned 911.

Police were alerted to Baylor's body by motorists who saw it on the highway. Investigators took blood samples from the site and the woman's home to determine if Baylor had been in the house. They plan to show the woman a picture of Baylor.

Baylor, on parole since Monday from Camp Koehler near Sault Ste Marie in the Upper Peninsula, had been serving a four month to two year sentence after pleading guilty in 1992 to attempted malicious destruction of a building. A year earlier he was put on probation for malicious destruction of private property, according to Recorder's of Court documents.

Neighbors said the woman is a retired school teacher who lives alone but is looked after by neighbors. She was expected to be released Thursday afternoon from an area hospital, police said.

Neighbors, who said they have known the woman for years, were incensed by the attack. "We've been on the block a long time," said R.J. Blackburn. "We are like a close-knit family. We all look out for her."

Sophie died of complications related to this incident.
