Birth surname was Tetreau. Immigrated from Quebec to Illinois as a child (about 1848) with his parents. Married first to Rusethee who died about a year after their marriage. Married second to his second cousin Mary Louise Tetrault. Both families' surname was changed to Tatro in the United States. William Tatro lost his right arm in a rail-yard accident around 1889. Then in the summer of 1905 he was bitten by a rat on a finger of his left hand and developed blood poisoning. The doctor advised amputation of his left arm to halt the spreading of the infection, but William said he would rather die than live without any arms, so he refused the amputation. He is buried in the William Tatro family plot of the Hartington Cemetery (unmarked burial).
