Following are excerpts from an article published in The Sun, Baltimore, on Monday, 6/25/1923, page 20:
....JOHN F. LEWANDOWSKI, 17 years old, 316 South Castle street; drowned in Bear creek....
The drowning of young Lewandowski occurred Saturday night while he was swimming in Bear creek.
He had left his companions on the bank and had undressed on the hulk of a sailing boat nearby. Soon afterward Emory Norris, a deputy sheriff, heard cries for help. He rowed rapidly toward the sound but found nothing. Lewandowski's companions, believing that he merely had lost his bearings in the darkness, had gone off.
In the morning Norris reported the occurrence to Sergt. William T. Eaton, of the Dundalk police. Eaton, investigating, discovered the boy's clothes. The creek was dragged and the body recovered after several hours....
[FYI: Despite Johnny's middle initial appearing as "F." in the above article, there is reason to believe that it more likely was actually "T."]

NOTE: There are errors (one definite, the other probable) on Johnny's tombstone, regarding his correct birth and death dates. The dates appearing atop this Find A Grave memorial are the ones that should be considered accurate.
