Ole Kent Berg
1936 - 2017
Ole Kent Berg passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah surrounded by his loving family. Kent was born June 16, 1936 to Echo Hortense Nebeker and Carl Knudsen Berg in Ogden, Utah. He was the youngest of 4 children. Kent grew up in Ogden and graduated valedictorian from Ogden High School, 1954. He went on to receive an associate degree from Weber State College and a BA in philosophy from the University of Utah in 1965. He served in the Western Canadian Mission from 1956 - 1958 for the LDS church. When he returned, he married the love of his life, Myra Henderson in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, June 5,1959. Together they raised 6 children.
Along with his love for his wife and family Kent enjoyed the continual process of learning. He was an avid reader, loved music, and had a knack for solving puzzles. He played the piano, sang with his children, and could often be found with his camera around his neck. He took pleasure in his children and grandchildren. He was sure to always ask them about their own studies and interests, help with editing a paper or encouraging them to excel. He delighted in being able to support them at their many sporting events, school plays, and music performances.
Professional accomplishments include 30 years of service with the Utah State Department of Education, Division of Rehabilitation. His passion for volunteer work was evident in the many different organizations he served including LDS Hospital where he served with Distinction, 5000 hours. Kent also enjoyed his years performing with the Swanee Singers and always cheered for the Utes!
Kent served as 1st Counselor in the Bishopric, Monument Park 8th Ward and was a wonderful Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a temple ordinance worker in the Salt Lake LDS Temple for 10 years. He cherished the relationships created through church service. He had a strong testimony of the gospel and a belief in the Savior, Jesus Christ.
Kent is survived by his wife, Myra Henderson Berg and 6 children, Michelle (Mark) Kunkel, Teresa (Scott) Douglas, David (Joanne), Roxanne (fiancé Brent Brinkerhoff), Jason (Paige), Daniel (Cary), 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He has a very large loving family who will miss him very much.
A viewing will take place on Thursday, March 23rd from 6:30 - 8:30pm at the Foothill Stake Center, 1933 S. 2100 E. SLC, UT. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on March 24th, same location, where there will be a viewing prior from 10-11:00am. Interment, Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery. The family wishes to express appreciation to Gail Christensen for the kind care Kent received.
